Rowing groups

Juniors

Junior rowing at Rosscarbery is about learning, friendship and the thrill of racing as a crew. Young people can join from age 10, and no experience is needed.

Juniors build skills, confidence and fitness on the Lagoon, and as they progress they race at regattas all along the West Cork coast and beyond.

Our junior groups

Age groups follow each organising body's rules, not your child's age on race day. For coastal rowing (South West regattas, the Irish Coastal and All-Ireland championships, and Rowing Ireland junior and junior 16 sculling) it is your child's age on 1 January of the competition year. Rowing Ireland under-21 sculling and flat-water junior grades go by age on 31 August. Your coach will place your child in the right group, so please make sure the club has an accurate date of birth.

  • Under 12s: for new rowers aged 10 and 11 (and some 12-year-olds, depending on their birthday). The focus is on fun, water confidence and learning the basics.
  • Under 14s: building technique and teamwork, getting a taste of regatta racing, and a first chance to try offshore and beach sprints.
  • Under 16s: more training and more racing. This is when committed rowers start to be put forward for High Performance.
  • Under 18s: competitive crews racing at championship level, with a pathway to international selection for those who want it.

What juniors do

  • Offshore sculling and beach sprints as they gain experience
  • Winter fitness and indoor rowing
  • Racing in the South West Championship, county and national championships, and the Junior Championships
  • Club events, fundraisers and the summer regatta on the Lagoon
